Ombra to Develop Sustainable Space Exploration System for the U.S. Space Force
TAMPA, FL –Ombra, in collaboration with the University of Texas, announces it was selected for a STTR Phase I Contract in the amount of $179,766.44 to develop the Biomanufacturing for Space Technology and Resource Utilization (BIO-STAR). This initiative addresses critical challenges for the United States Space Force (USSF) by enabling sustainable space exploration through advanced biomanufacturing.
The Space Force Research Laboratory and SpaceWERX are collaborating to enhance the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs by simplifying processes, aiming to shorten proposal-to-award timelines, broadening access for small businesses, and reducing administrative burdens through ongoing improvements in contract execution. Launched in 2018, the USSF’s Open Topic SBIR/STTR program has expanded the scope of funded innovations, and since Spring 2025, Ombra has embarked on this contract to deliver cutting-edge capabilities to bolster U.S. national defense.
“Ombra is honored to work with the University of Texas to advance sustainable space exploration through BIO-STAR for the U.S. Space Force. With this contract, we continue pushing the boundaries of biomanufacturing and space technology, ensuring our nation’s leadership in the final frontier,” — Michael Fieldson, President of Ombra.
